Which Blue Cross plans do you accept?
We are in-network with Anthem Blue Cross of California and most commercial Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans from across the country through the BCBS national provider network. This includes Anthem BCBS multi-state plans, BCBS of Illinois, Texas, New York, Florida, Massachusetts, and many others. We do not accept Blue Shield of California, which is a separate company. If you’re unsure, call us at (415) 653-3100 and we’ll verify your coverage.
I have BCBS from another state — am I covered in San Francisco?
In most cases, yes. Blue Cross Blue Shield plans include a national provider network, which means your out-of-state BCBS plan likely covers in-network outpatient psychiatric services with Dr. Hariprasad. We recommend calling the member services number on the back of your card to confirm — ask specifically about out-of-state outpatient mental health coverage and whether Dr. Ravi Hariprasad (NPI on file) is in-network.
What will my out-of-pocket cost be?
As an in-network provider, your costs are determined by your specific BCBS plan — typically a copay ($20–60) or a coinsurance percentage after your deductible is met. Call your plan’s member services and ask about your mental health benefits for CPT codes 90792 (initial evaluation) and 99213–99215 (follow-up visits). We’re happy to help you estimate your costs before your first visit.
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?
Most BCBS PPO and EPO plans allow self-referral for outpatient mental health services — no referral needed. Some HMO plans may require one. Check your plan details or call your plan’s member services to confirm.
Do you offer video visits (telepsychiatry)?
Yes. After an initial in-person visit at our Union Square office, follow-up appointments can be conducted via secure video. Telepsychiatry is covered by most BCBS plans at the same rate as in-person visits.
What’s the difference between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California?
Despite the similar names, Anthem Blue Cross of California and Blue Shield of California are completely separate insurance companies with different provider networks. We are in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and most national BCBS plans, but we are not in-network with Blue Shield of California. If your card says "Blue Shield" without "Blue Cross," please call us to discuss options.
